About Us
Bear and Bug was founded around 11 years ago by Chris and Jean Wright
after immigrating to South Africa from England and settling in Grahamstown,
where their daughter attended Rhodes University.
Thereafter they decided to bring Bear and Bug to Cape town and settled
into their new premises at 44 Viking Business Place, Thornton with
business partner at the time Michael Baker the team was later joined by
Rowena Derby.
In June of 2006 Chris and Karen Flanigan happened upon Bear and Bug when
in urgent need of having their guillotine’s blades sharpened. Upon
entering the premises Chris realized that this was the perfect business to
own – as he had been researching and planning on opening a very similar
business! Chris Wright and Rowena Derby had overheard the couple’s
discussion and within a week Chris and Karen Flanigan had decided to
purchase the business lock stock and barrel. Chris and Karen Flanigan took
official ownership of the business on the 01 October 2006. Rowena Derby
decided to remain with the company and was excited at the prospect of new
ideas and the idea of being part of a dynamic team who was willing to take
Bear and Bug to the next level.
